Grade 3 Reading Tips

A few habits that make every passage easier — plus vocabulary themes a parent or teacher can drop into the passage generator on the practice page.

Sound it out

If a word looks new, try the first sound, then say the rest. Many words sound just like they look.

Picture it in your head

Stop after each paragraph and imagine the scene. Could you draw it? That means you understood.

Ask one why

After reading, ask yourself one why question. Why did that happen? Why is that important?
