Properties of and Changes in Matter
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space, and exists as a solid, liquid, or gas.
- Matter has properties such as colour, texture, and state.
- A physical change alters form but not the substance (ice melting to water).
- A chemical change creates a new substance (wood burning to ash).
The clue to a chemical change is a new substance you cannot easily turn back — burning cannot be undone.
