Forces Acting on Structures and Mechanisms
Structures experience external and internal forces.
- An external force acts from outside (wind, a load, gravity).
- Internal forces (compression squeezing, tension stretching) build up inside the material.
- A structure must resist these forces to avoid bending, breaking, or collapsing.
Compression squeezes a material together while tension pulls it apart — a strong design balances both.
