Pure Substances and Mixtures
Matter can be classified as a pure substance or a mixture.
- A pure substance has one kind of particle; a mixture contains two or more.
- A solution is a mixture that looks uniform (salt dissolved in water).
- Particle theory explains matter as tiny particles in constant motion.
Because a solution's particles are evenly spread, it looks the same throughout — but it is still a mixture.
